Anniversary and Valentine's Getaway Packages

Anniversary and Valentine's Getaway Packages

The short answer

Anniversary getaways are planned around a date, not just a place. Lock the dates early, especially for Valentine's week and milestone years, decide up front whether it is a surprise, and tell your advisor what the occasion means so the gestures on property fit your relationship rather than a template.

Anniversary getaways are the one trip a year where the date is fixed before the destination is, and that changes how I plan them. With a regular vacation you pick a place and find a week that works. With anniversary getaways and Valentine's getaways the week is already chosen for you, often the same week thousands of other couples are chasing, so the real planning is about protecting that date, deciding whether one of you is being surprised, and making the days on property feel like yours rather than a brochure's.

I plan a lot of these from our Long Island office, and the couples who are happiest at the end did not necessarily go farther or spend more. They got the timing right, told me what the occasion meant, and let me handle the quiet coordination with the hotel. This page is about that side of anniversary getaways: how far ahead to book for Valentine's and milestone years, what sells out first, how to keep a surprise a surprise, which gestures a resort can really deliver, and what I need to know so the trip fits. Still choosing where to go? Our romantic getaways guide is the companion piece for destination and resort style; this page is about the occasion itself.

Milestone anniversaries, Valentine's Day, and the other peak dates

Not every celebration date is equal, and these are the four I watch most closely.

Valentine's week

February is already high season in the warm-weather destinations most couples want, and Valentine's stacks demand on top of it. Adults-only rooms, oceanfront categories, and good dinner slots go first.

Milestone years

Tenth, twenty-fifth, fortieth, fiftieth. Bigger and farther plans mean long-haul flights and signature suites at properties with little inventory, so the lead time is closer to a year than a season.

Holiday and long weekends

Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day weekends pull the same three-night crowd. A Thursday departure often changes everything.

The date you married

If you married in June or over the holidays, your date lands in a busy travel window every year. That is why I ask for the date before the destination.

If your anniversary falls near Valentine's, plan the two as one Valentine's getaway with the anniversary attached, rather than fighting peak demand twice. For warm-weather dates, my Caribbean all-inclusive and Punta Cana, Antigua, and Sandals pages cover the properties I book most often for celebrations, and for a milestone on a bucket-list scale, see safaris and honeymoons.

How far ahead to book, what sells out, and how prices move

Timing is the part couples most often get wrong, and the easiest for me to fix if we start early. These are lead times, not guarantees, and they assume you want a specific property rather than whatever is left.

OccasionSuggested lead timeWhat sells out first
Valentine's week escape3 to 5 monthsAdults-only and oceanfront categories, then private-dinner and spa slots.
Milestone anniversary, long-haul6 to 12 monthsPremium-cabin flights, signature suites, and dated experiences such as a vow renewal slot.
Holiday or long-weekend anniversary3 to 5 monthsThree-night stays near a nonstop flight; Thursday-to-Sunday patterns fill first.
Anniversary on flexible dates4 to 8 weeksVery little; the trade-off is choosing the property around what is open.

On price, the pattern is simple even if the numbers are not. Rates climb as a property's inventory tightens, so a room booked early for Valentine's week usually costs less than the same room booked late. If your dates can slide a few days off the exact peak, the trip often costs less and the resort has more room to say yes to the extras. I will not quote figures here because they move with season and availability; ask me for a quote on your real dates.

Planning a surprise, and how I keep it discreet

Many of the celebration trips I plan are a surprise for one partner, and they need a different workflow. I ask which email address and phone number are safe, and everything from me goes only there, including invoices. I check what you cannot ask about directly: passport validity, days off already blocked, whether a shared calendar or card statement would give the game away. And I give you a cover story you can maintain, usually "we are going away that weekend, pack for warm weather," with a packing list sent to you alone.

On property, the resort knows it is a surprise before you land, so the front desk does not announce the upgrade or the dinner, the room amenity appears while you are at breakfast, and the in-room note is in your words. The one thing I ask is honesty about your partner's taste; a surprise somewhere they would never choose is not a gift.

Gestures a resort can actually deliver

There is a gap between what a brochure implies and what staff can reliably do on a given night, and I only promise the second kind. These are the gestures I set up most often for anniversary getaways, all of them things properties handle routinely when asked in advance.

In-room on arrival

Flowers, sparkling wine, a handwritten note, a small cake, or a framed photo of the two of you. Simple, reliable, and the moment most couples remember.

A dinner set apart

A private table on the beach or terrace, a chef's tasting for two, or the best table at sunset, settled before you arrive so nothing is discussed at the table.

Vow renewal

Many resorts have a coordinator for this: a short sunset ceremony, an officiant, a few photos, and dinner after, for the two of you or a few people you fly in.

Gifting on property

Jewelry, a book, or something personal delivered to the room on the right night, so the moment is yours and not the hotel's.

Availability and cost change by property and date, so none of these come with a fixed promise; I confirm what is possible for your stay and give you honest options. Tell me what you have in mind and I will build it, and I handle the coordination with the resort directly.

What to tell me so the trip fits the two of you

The more I know about the relationship, the less generic the trip. A few honest answers usually do it.

How you actually spend time together

Do you read side by side, or need a plan for every hour? Early risers or late dinners? A couple that recharges quietly needs a different room location and a lighter itinerary than one that wants a daily highlight.

What the milestone means

A tenth anniversary after a hard few years is a different trip from a fortieth with a lifetime of shared places behind it. If there is a destination tied to your story, it belongs in the plan.

What to avoid

Past trips that did not work, a dislike of crowds or heat, a food or mobility need, or a place one of you has already been with someone else. These are easier to design around than to apologize for later.

Bring me those three things and your dates, and I will do the rest. To see how the working relationship goes, why use a travel agent and the benefits of using a travel agent cover it plainly, and locals can meet the team on our Long Island travel agency page.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book an anniversary getaway?

For a specific property on fixed dates, three to five months for most trips and six to twelve months for a milestone anniversary involving long-haul flights or a signature suite. If your dates can move, four to eight weeks is workable, but you will be choosing the property around what is open. Starting early is what lets the resort say yes to the extras.

Is Valentine's Day really that hard to travel on?

Harder than most couples expect. February is already high season in the warm-weather destinations people want, and Valentine's stacks celebration demand on top of it, so adults-only rooms, oceanfront categories, and good dinner slots go first. If your dates can slide a few days off the exact week, I can usually find the same trip with more availability and room for the extras.

Can you plan a surprise anniversary trip without my partner finding out?

Yes, and I do it often. I use only the email and phone number you tell me are safe, including for invoices, I check passport and time-off details you cannot ask about directly, and I brief the resort so nothing is announced at check-in. You get a packing list and a cover story you can maintain. I only ask that the surprise is somewhere your partner would genuinely choose.

What should we do differently for a milestone anniversary like a 25th or 50th?

Start earlier, think longer, and pick one signature experience rather than many. Milestone trips tend to mean long-haul flights, suites at properties with little inventory, and dated experiences such as a vow renewal, all of which book out months ahead. I also ask what the milestone means to you, because a destination tied to your story usually beats one chosen from a list.

What makes an anniversary trip different from a regular vacation?

The date is fixed before the destination, so availability rather than preference sets the boundaries, and the trip is judged on whether it felt like the two of you rather than on the sights. In practice the room and one great dinner matter more than the excursion list, and there is a story behind the trip that the property can honor if I tell them, so I make sure they know it.
